Somerset Youth Parliament explains importance of voting

Young people from Somerset’s Youth Parliament are passionate about where they live and explain why it’s important to register to vote, to use your vote and to stand as a councillor in Somerset on 5 May. We’d like to thank them for getting involved and giving up their time to make this video:

Local elections, due to take place on Thursday 5 May, will be the biggest local elections in Somerset for many years and will set the course of local government in our county for a generation to come.

Voters will choose who represents them for the next five years at county and local levels – a term that is longer than usual. City, town, and parish council elections take place on the same day.

For the first year, the 110 newly elected county councillors will be responsible for existing Somerset County Council services and will oversee the creation of a new single Somerset Council. Then from 1 April 2023, when the new Somerset Council comes into being, they will assume responsibility for all council services in Somerset.

So, it’s important for Somerset residents to get involved – by voting or by standing for election on 5 May at both county and grassroots levels. Find out more here
